Isotek Oil and Gas has purchased two defibrillators which can help to shock the heart to restart it following a cardiac arrest. Staff were also giving training from first aid charity St John Ambulance to learn how to use the devices. Workshop manager Neil Kershaw, who is only too aware of the importance of first aid when he helped to save his wife, Angela, from choking, was among those given the lesson.

He said: ‘Using an AED device is so simple as it automatically diagnoses and treats someone suffering a cardiac arrest. It will certainly give us peace of mind that we have access to this life saving equipment if needed’.

Figures show that one person suffers a heart attack in the UK every two minutes and as many as one in three will die before they reach hospital. For every buy ambien online visa minute that passes with defibrillation the chances of survival fall by up to 10 per cent.

Gill Sharland from St John Ambulance said: ‘We’re delighted that Isotek has taken up our offer to purchase AEDs and hope many others follow suit. Businesses who have experienced someone dying of a cardiac arrest on their premises know it’s extremely traumatic and upsetting for everyone involved. We know that those deaths can be dramatically reduced with this easy to use machine. We provide training, but it is actually so straightforward it tells you what to do itself, enabling anyone to be the difference between a life lost and a life saved’.

The Yorkshire Evening Post has teamed up with St John Ambulance as part of our First Aid For All campaign to train an army of lifesavers in Leeds. Hundreds of readers have already taken part in basic first aid courses to learn to be the difference between life and death. And we are calling on more readers to show their support to help us smash our target of 500 lifesavers in Leeds.
